A Message from Her Honour
The Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan
I am deeply proud of the role our Merchant Navy has played in world conflicts. In the First and Second World Wars, although they were not compelled to serve, merchant crews volunteered to work on the vessels that transported crucial troops and supplies. The Atlantic crossing was extraordinarily dangerous, and thousands of Canadians died on the merchant ships. May we never forget their courage and their sacrifice.
I am grateful to the Merchant Navy Commemorative Theme Project for seeking to educate Canadians about the vital role of the Allied Merchant Navy, and for honouring these veterans who gave so much for the cause of peace.
In many ways, we owe our freedom to the men and women of our Merchant Navy; may we take to heart the words of Laurence Binyon, and never forget their sacrifice.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
