Merchant Navy Veterans Day commemorative event

It is with great pride that I recognize the sacrifice and dedication of our Allied Merchant Navy Veterans.
These brave men and women travelled the treacherous seas in both the First and the Second World
Wars to supply the Allied Forces with food, munitions, petroleum, and troops. Victory would not have been possible without the support of our Allied Merchant Navy Veterans.
They kept their ships sailing in terrible conditions and facing constant dangers. Sadly this selfless commitment cost merchant sailors their lives or health. Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the declaration of the Second World War. For six years, the Allied Merchant Navy navigated the waters through enemy fire, German U-boats, and violent storms. Thanks to our courageous Canadians who fought, Canada is a country of peace and freedom.
On Merchant Navy Veterans Day of Remembrance their dedication to this country will be commemorated for decades to come.
Sincerely,
The Honourable Gail Shea, P.C., M.P.
